5 Reasons Your Body Needs An Oceanfront Beach Vacation this Summer
Whether you’re headed on vacation or just going to the dentist, the ocean can do your body good, according to research on the benefits of being within sight of the sea.
A new study of virtual reality used during dental procedures finds that patients report less pain when they’re exposed to images of the shoreline. That follows previous research showing that spending time at the beach can improve physical and mental well-being in general.
“Increased views of blue space is significantly associated with lower levels of psychological distress,” said Amber L. Pearson, a Michigan State University health geographer who co-authored a 2016 study that determined just being able to see the ocean can relieve stress.
Analyzing health survey data and the visibility of blue space and green space in Wellington, New Zealand, Pearson and colleagues found that people with a view of the ocean experience better mental health – regardless of their age, wealth, gender or other factors. Green space, on the other hand, does not have the same calming effect.
A 2017 study by U.K. researchers found similar benefits from a virtual walk along the ocean. Compared to dental patients who took a virtual walk through an urban setting and to those who experienced no virtual reality at all, patients who underwent a tooth extraction or cavity filling while viewing oceanfront scenes through a headset reported much less pain from their operation.
“We have done a lot of work recently which suggests that people are happiest and most relaxed when they are at the seaside,” said Mathew White, the study’s co-author. “So it seemed only natural to investigate whether we could ‘bottle’ this experience and use it to help people in potentially stressful healthcare contexts.”
So if you’re worried about going to the dentist, just imagine yourself at the beach. The sights, sounds and feel of the ocean can make you healthier. Take a look at these photos from Tideline Ocean Resort & Spa in Palm Beach, Fla. and see how they make you feel.
Tideline is in the heart of Palm Beach, which is one of Florida’s best beaches along the Atlantic Ocean. The relaxation you experience from visiting an oceanfront resort has multiple benefits for your health.
Here are five more reasons your body could use an oceanfront beach vacation this summer:
*Being near the ocean increases your body’s levels of serotonin, a hormone that makes you feel good and reduces feelings of anxiety and depression.
*Taking off your shoes and walking barefoot through the sand is good for your muscles and it relaxes and energizes your nerves at the same time. Plus, swimming is great exercise with little physical risk due to the water’s limited resistance.
*Sand is a natural exfoliant that brushes dead cells off your skin, while salt cleanses your pores.
*Salty ocean air is good for your respiratory system, increasing absorption of oxygen and helping you sleep better.
*When you’re out in the sun your body takes in Vitamin D and releases endorphins that relieve stress and make you feel happier and more relaxed.
